Maya Angelou is one of the most famous and well-loved writers of our time. Her strength and writing skills have empowered people of all ages, races and genders for decades. Her literature is truly life changing! Her famous poem ‘Still I Rise’ spoke about remaining strong and fearless in the face of sadness and difficulty.

 

Angelou’s 1969 biography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, made history as the first nonfiction best-seller by an African-American woman. The amazing Angelou has written 36 books 30 of which were best sellers.  

In 1961 Maya Angelou moved to Ghana where she taught in the University of Ghana’s School of Music and Drama. While in Ghana she met with Malcolm X and in 1964, returned to America to help him build his new Organization of African American Unity. Maya also worked with Dr Martin Luther King Jr in the civil rights movement.
