Mae Carol Jemison is an American physician and NASA astronaut. She became the first African-American woman to travel to space, when she went into orbit aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour on September 12, 1992.
Mae courageously spent eight days in space conducting scientific experiments on her surroundings. Mae returned to earth on September 20th 1992.
When Mae returned home from space she said:
“Society should recognise how much both women and members of other minority groups can contribute if given the opportunity.”
